I started out as an independent contractor five years ago, but I’ve only recently had business cards printed. Why? I hear you ask. Why would someone so committed to helping other people find their own voice… not be able to find her own?
Because I didn’t know what I wanted to say.
The main problem was that when it came to words, I could do whatever you asked me to – create blog posts, do your social media, write newspaper articles, edit, make you a brochure, do your newsletters, develop your website content – and still do. This forms a major part of my business.
But recently I’ve realised that there’s a major step most people find challenging and that’s putting their communications framework under one umbrella. I set about developing my Strategic Business Storytelling packages and sharing them here, via my website.
In the process of doing this work, I realised that my own content needed an overhaul. I sourced some new images, upgraded to a new WordPress theme and set about offering three clear services – Digital Branding Strategy, Social Media Coaching and the 7 key steps to Strategic Business Storytelling.
Since then, I’ve been busy quoting and undertaking new work – as my own best client!
You see, I wasn’t practising what I preach. I had far too many services listed on my website and my message wasn’t clear. I’ve even had someone make a comment recently about my ‘new business’ – despite the fact that I’ve often talked about what I do. But my new clarity around what I do has brought a whole new level of understanding… with the resulting increased revenue I promise my own customers!
Apart from keeping me above the breadline (!), the most important takeaway from this is that we business owners really need to hone in on what we’re selling. I was too busy working for other people, than to spend much-needed time on my own communications. When I realised there wasn’t going to be that magic spare day each week for me to work on my business, I clocked up some evening overtime and it’s been well-rewarded.
My next steps from here…
I’ve still got more to do regarding my own business communications and whatever I finalise will have a built-in annual review. I’ll need to ensure that my website this time next year reflects what I’m doing, then update with anything new on the horizon. Until then, not only do I have snazzy new business cards, but a brochure too! It’s one of those all-essential steps in backing yourself that every business owner should take.
